Vronay / AECOM Present at NYWEA February 04, 2009
Vronay Engineering Services and AECOM Water, formerly Metcalf & Eddy of New York, presented their paper, “Energy Savings and Greenhouse Gas Reduction at the Owls Head Water Pollution Control Plant” at the 2009 New York Water and Environmental Association (NYWEA) conference held in New York City during February 2-4, 2009.
The paper outlined the team`s nearly 2-year study and design proposal for reducing the energy consumption at the Owls Head treatment plant and includes measures for increasing the on-site utilization of digester gas by modifying the existing medium-speed, dual-fuel, internal combustion engines.
The ambitious project, which will include a completely new digester gas cleaning and compression system, a new natural gas blending system and all new piping and controls for the gas system will commence design in the third quarter of 2009. The project is being funded on a fast track basis by the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and it is expected that the design and construction of the new gas system will be operational within 12-months from the notice to proceed.
The second phase of the project, which AECOM will pursue concurrently with the gas system upgrades, will consist of modifications to the existing medium-speed engines to reduce their emissions and diesel fuel consumption while increasing their capability to utilize 100% of the digester gas produced on-site. These modifications, designed by Vronay Engineering Services will consist of a new, electronically controlled, high-pressure common rail fuel injection system and new engine controls. Throughout the project, Vronay will furnish design and technical service as well as liaison and design services during construction as a Subconsultant to AECOM.
From L-R: Mr. Roy Tsuchihashi, PhD, Ms. Jane Atkinson, P.E. and Mr. William Pfrang, P.E. of AECOM. Mr. William Grandner – Plant Superintendent, Owls Head WPCP and Mr. John Vronay, P.E., Vronay Engineering Services.
